The Dutch East India Company’s flagship Batavia was built in Amsterdam in 1628 and armed with a number of bronze guns and 24 cast-iron cannons. On 27 October 1628, the newly built Batavia, commissioned by the Dutch East India Company, left Texel, Holland to the East Indies. She sailed under the command of Francisco Pelsaert - one of the VOC's most experienced merchants - in a fleet of seven ships.
Batavia on her maiden voyage, was made famous by the subsequent mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. A twentieth-century replica of the ship, also called the Batavia, can be visited in Lelystad, Netherlands.
