Natsu-sensu (summer folding fan), Kazari-sensu (decorated folding fan),
Shugi-sensu (folding fan as formal dress)…
Sensu folding fans have been used as a handy tool for Japanese people
since old times because of their various ways of use.
A Sensu folding fan is also called ‘Suehiro’,
which means that it widens towards the end,
and therefore it symbolizes good fortune in the future.
Lately, folding fans have become very popular among young people
in Japan as a cool fashion item, and more and more
people have started to use them as an ‘eco’ item to cool off on hot days.
< ‘Suehiro’ >
A Sensu folding fan is often called ‘Suehiro’.
When a fan is opened, it extends out wider than its original shape,
which represents prosperity and good fortune.
The custom of sending fans as congratulatory gifts, which started in Muromachi era,
still continues today.
Sensu folding fans are used in various traditional Japanese celebrations
such as weddings and longevity celebrations etc.
They are not popular only in Japan.
They are now very popular as a souvenir among visitors from around the world.
< The Structure of Sensu >
Parts of a Sensu Folding Fan
Each part of a Sensu folding fan has its own name.
There are two types of Sensu folding fans: ‘Jinaga’ and ‘Tanchi’,
whose ougimen (paper/cloth part) are different in size.
Ougimen: Most fans feature paper, but some use cloth.
Kaname: Used to hold the spines of the fan in place.
Oyabone: The outmost and thickest spokes of the fan.
Nakabone: Inner spines. Thinner than the outer oyabone.
< How to Use >
How to Unfold a Sensu
Hold the Sensu sideways gently in your hand. Put your right hand on the kaname, and hold the center of the Sensu from below with your left hand. With your left thumb, twist the nakabone (the inner spines) a little in a clockwise direction so as to stagger them open.
Then with your both hands, open it slowly.
If you unfold a Sensu quickly in one motion, it will be a cause of damage.
It’s important to unfold it slowly and carefully.
How to Fold a Sensu
Hold the opened fan in your both hands.
Start folding the fan carefully from the rightmost end with your right hand.
Do not try to fold the fan with one hand. It’s necessary to fold it carefully along its creases.
After it’s closed, don’t forget to fasten the top part of the fan
with a paper fastener or a rubber band attached to the fan at the purchase.
By doing this, you can prevent the fan from losing shape
How to Handle
When carrying a fan, it’s better to place it in a case attached at the purchase.
Sensu folding fans are so delicate that it might lead to tear or damage of the ougimen if carried in contact with hard, sharp, or heavy items in your bag.
If a case is not attached to your Sensu, it’s good to carry it wrapped in a soft cloth like a handkerchief.
It’s very effective for much longer use.
