t present, enterprises are facing multiple challenges: intensified global climate change, rigid growth in energy demand, and tightening resource and environmental constraints. In this context, energy conservation and efficiency enhancement have become one of the most direct and effective measures to promote green development. ABB's synchronous reluctance motor and frequency converter packaging solution can help customers in various industries save energy and increase efficiency, achieving green and low-carbon transformation.
In typical applications, using frequency converters to control industrial motors can reduce energy consumption by 25%. When the frequency converter is paired with an IE5 high energy efficiency level synchronous reluctance motor, the optimization of energy efficiency will be more significant. It is estimated that devices using electric motors consume about 45% of global electricity, accounting for about 70% of industry consumption, so the opportunity for positive changes is enormous.

Frequency converter optimization of motor operation
The frequency converter controls and optimizes the operation of the motor by adjusting its speed and torque to meet the constantly changing requirements of the system. Without it, the motor will operate at full speed or be regulated through mechanical speed control of energy consumption such as valves, gears, throttle, brakes, etc. Importantly, there is a non-linear relationship between motor speed and energy consumption, which means that even if the speed is slightly reduced, it can significantly save energy. For example, in some cases, slowing down the motor in a pump or fan by 20% is enough to halve its energy consumption.

New Progress in Efficient Motors
In July 2021, according to the European Union's ecological design regulations, the minimum international energy efficiency standard IE3 covering most low-voltage motors was introduced. However, ABB has launched a combination of synchronous reluctance motors and frequency converters to meet the more stringent IE5 level.
Combining IE3 induction motors with frequency converters typically reduces energy costs by up to 25%. Upgrading this combination to an IE5 high energy efficiency synchronous reluctance motor and frequency converter combination can further save 3% -4% in energy costs, depending on the application and operating conditions.
Given that most of the motors currently installed in industry have a lifespan of over 10 years, upgrading them to an optimized combination of efficient motors and frequency converters will have significant energy-saving and efficiency enhancing effects. Reasonably estimated, global electricity consumption can be reduced by 10%, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Rapid cost recovery upgrades
For enterprises using motor driven equipment, upgrading to a combination of synchronous reluctance motors and frequency converters is reasonable from an energy-saving perspective. It is crucial that the purchase price of the motor is only a small part of its lifespan cost, as most of the cost comes from the energy required for its operation. The initial cost of purchasing a synchronous reluctance motor and frequency converter combination may be slightly higher than that of an IE3 motor and frequency converter combination, but the energy savings it saves typically make up for the difference in just one year. Afterwards, it will continue to generate annual savings for the next decade or more.
