Brief Introduction:
These conductors are formed by several wires of aluminium alloy and aluminium clad steel (ARAWELD),
stranded in concentric layers.The wire or wires which form the core, are made of aluminium clad steel and the
external layer or layers, are of aluminium alloy. Aluminium clad steel core consist normally of 1, 7 or 19 wires .
The diameters of aluminium clad steel and aluminium alloy wires can be the same,or different.
By varying the relative proportions of aluminium alloy and aluminium clad steel, the required characteristics for
any particular application can be reached.A higher U.T.S. can be obtained, by increasing aluminium clad steel content ,
and a higher current carrying capacity by increasing aluminium alloy content.
Applications:
Overhead transmission and distribution lines Medium, High and Extra High voltage .
Specially recommended in corrosive environments, crossings , or where a very high U.T.S. is needed.
Producing Process:
• Aluminium melting,continuous casting and thermomechanical rolling.
• Drawing.
• Artificial ageing.
• Stranding of aluminium clad steel cores.
• Stranding of aluminium alloy layers.
PROPERTIES:
Aluminium clad steel is a high strength steel, covered by a thick coating of pure aluminium (10% wire radious min.),
which is cold drawn to obtain required characteristics and final wire size.
The aluminium clad steel wires, in comparison with galvanized steel wires of same size,have the same tensile characteristics,
but a lower weight and a considerably higher electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.
This last property is specially important in the construction of the finished conductor,
where the aluminium alloy wires are in contact with the aluminium clad steel wires of the reinforcing core,
thus avoiding the possibility of galvanic corrosion between core and surrounding layers of aluminium alloy.
In comparison with A.C.S.R. conductors, AACSR/AW conductors, have considerable technical advantages in
overhead lines. Its higher U.T.S /weight ratio and corrosion protection provide a longer life cycle and the possibility
to reduce supporting towers.
