Shunting locomotive is the basic power of shunting work, and its technical requirements are different from those of general locomotive. Due to the need to start the traction or push the train set in a short distance, it does not need a higher construction speed, but it needs a certain traction force. Due to the need to move forward or backward frequently, it requires a good look-out condition. Due to the main operation in the station, it needs to pass a curve with a smaller radius, so it requires a small fixed wheelbase of the locomotive, and it often needs to start and stop. Therefore, the locomotive is required to be flexible in operation and good in braking performance. Due to frequent night work, the head and tail lights need good brightness; in addition, it is also required to facilitate the shunting personnel to get on and off safely, etc.

There are two types of shunting locomotive division of labor: one is based on the relatively fixed operation area; the other is based on the relatively fixed operation nature.

When two or more shunting locomotives are equipped in the station with busy shunting operation and more wiring, the relatively fixed operation area of each shunting locomotive shall be divided according to the characteristics of yard setting, shunting operation nature, train flow characteristics and station wiring, etc., which is called shunting area for short.

Generally, only one locomotive operates in a fixed range in each shunting area (except for those with a pre propulsion road in the hump), which can avoid mutual interference and conflict of shunting locomotive operation, facilitate locomotive crew and shunting personnel to be familiar with the characteristics and working conditions of equipment in the operation area, and facilitate shunting safety.

However, for stations with large traffic volume and busy operation, semi-automatic and automatic hump shunting yard is set. In order to improve shunting efficiency and complete shunting tasks in time, semi-automatic and automatic hump shunting yard with two or more shunting machines is set in the same hump or hump tail shunting area. Double push equipment is set at the head of the hump and two or more lead lines (parallel routes) are set at the tail of the hump. Ensure parallel operation between shunting locomotives, reduce cross interference, improve efficiency and ensure safety.
