Siberian cocklebur is an annual spring weed long used in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It grows mainly in northern Iran, Siberia, China, Japan, and other parts of central Asia. Siberian cocklebur belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its flavor has been described as pungent. The herb has an acrid and sweet taste. Siberian cocklebur contains the toxic glucosides, atractyloside and carboxyastractyloside. Based on secondary sources, these toxic compounds may target tissues and organs of high metabolic activity and cause a severe hepatitis with fatal liver failure. Also, these compounds may interact with detoxification or transformation systems in the liver at doses not thought to induce cytolysis. It has been suggested that this is due to blocking ADP-to-ATP conversion through inhibition of cytochrome P450. Clinical manifestations may be related to induced hypoglycemia, neurovegetative disorders, or subsequent renal failure.
