Large tempered glass (sometimes called toughened glass) is up to 5 times stronger than normal annealed glass, offering higher impact resistance. Large tempered glass can withstand strong direct impacts and even it does break, it shatters into small blunt granules. These granules are less likely to cause injury to human. 

This is achieved by heating regular glass at high temperatures (around 700°C) and then cooling down very quickly.
To begin the glass tempering process, the float glass must first be cut to the desired size. Next the glass goes through a heat treatment process. The heated glass is then cooled very quickly.  As a result, the outer surfaces go into compression and the interior remains in tension, which gives tempered (toughened) glass its strength. 

Due to its high strength and safety, jumbo size large tempered glass is often used in facade, cutain wall, storefront glass, doors, shopping malls, etc.
