Electric fence energizer :
How to Install a Fence Energizer
The electric fence energizer is a fence charger. The fence energizer takes common
household current, 120 volts, and increases it to a much higher voltage for use with
long-distance electric fences. Once you have properly put up your electric fence
around the perimeter of the area where you want to use it to help secure livestock,
you must connect it to your fence energizer. Installing the fence energizer correctly
is a critical process for having an efficient electric fencing system.
Instructions
1.
Mount the fence energizer on a vertical surface where it will be out of all weather.
Different energizer models will have different wall-mounting methods, brackets and
miscellaneous hardware. Protect all electrical connections on the energizer and the
incoming power source from moisture.
2.
Install one of the ground rods within 20 feet of the fence energizer. Pound the rod
into the soil with the 3 lb. hammer. The rod should protrude no more than 4 inches
above the soil. Place the second ground rod 6 to 10 feet from the first, and the third
ground rod 6 to 10 feet from the second. If possible, place the ground rods in an area
of soil that is consistently moist.
3.
Secure a separate ground-rod connector to the top of each rod with the screwdriver.
Ensure the connector is tight around the rod and physically "bites" into the metal
surface. A good ground system is key to an efficient electric fence.
4.
Strip one end of the 12-gauge insulated wire to reveal 1 inch of bare copper. Fit the
bare copper end into the wire connector of the farthest ground-rod connector. Tighten
the screw terminal.
5.
Run the insulated wire to the next ground-rod connector. Cut the wire to length.
Strip the end and insert into the wire screw terminal. Strip the end of the free wire
and insert it into the same wire connector. Tighten the screw terminal to secure the
two insulated wires.
6.Extend the single insulated wire to the last ground rod. Install the wire in the same
manner into the rod connector. Connect that last ground rod to the ground connection
on the fence energizer with the insulated 12-gauge wire. You should have a single wire
that leads from the energizer's ground connection to the first ground rod, then to the
second and then to the third rod.
7.
Connect the "hot wire" from the electric fence to the fence energizer's "hot" electrical
connector with the electric fence wire.
Tips & Warnings
Keep people and pets away from the electric fence after installation. Instruct all persons
in the method for disconnecting the electrical power from the fence charger. Check with
local ordinances, as some areas around the country may require posted signs warning
people of the electric fence.
