Patio Planting
Horticultural perlite is an ideal material for patio plantings in container boxes, tubs, and ornamental containers. Because a perlite soil mix is so light in weight, handling headaches are reduced as planters filled with a perlite soil mix may be easily moved to rearrange a patio planting display or to protect plants against adverse weather. A suggested soil mix for patio planters is one third horticultural perlite, one third peat moss and one third composted wood product such as bark or shavings, although 100% fine perlite also can be used! Patio plantings in either type of media will require more frequent watering than garden plantings since they tend to dry out faster.
Roofscape Gardening
For the apartment dweller with a limited outdoor roof garden, perlite can be of enormous benefit. The weight of planting mixes is very important when the strength of the supporting structure must be considered. As a result, a perlite growing mix can be several times as deep as a conventional soil mix without increasing weight. This enables the rooftop gardener to grow larger trees. shrubs, and plants and to have more extensive gardens.
Perlite improves the texture of heavy silt or clay soils by increasing aeration and drainage. It also minimises the tendency to 'cap' over germinating seeds, and lasts for many years.
Treat difficult seed beds and flower beds by working up to 25% of perlite into the top 5-10cm before sowing.
For trees, shrubs and roses, mix perlite with the soil when back-filling the planting hole, in order to stimulate root growth. Firm the mixture around the roots and water thoroughly.
Perlite is an inert, sterile, neutral, ultra lightweight aggregate with a very high air and water-holding capacity. Perlite can be sterilised for re-use by steaming, by flame-gun or by treating with any proprietry chemical sterilizer.
For capillary watering use at least 25mm depth of perlite in place of sand or gravel in polythene-lined benches or suitable trays.
For ring culture and low cost commercial production of tomatoes use perlite in a polythene lined trench or channel, and saturate with nutrient solution.
