VVRS Dressed Grains - Sorghum
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Sorghum is mainly grown in Queensland and New South Wales for use as stock feed. Of all the grains, sorghum is the most variable in its protein and amino acid content. A protein content of 6 to 16 percent on an ‘as fed’ basis (7 to 18 percent on a dry matter basis) can occur in practice. Sorghum can be classified into two types according to the level of tannin content in the grain. Grain sorghum typically has a low tannin content.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
• Low tannin sorghum can be fed as the sole grain component to pigs and poultry of all ages. For growing meat chickens, sorghum can be used as the sole grain if the tannin content is less than 0.1% and there is adequate choline and methionine present in the diet
.• Laying hens appear to tolerate tannin levels up to 1 percent of the diet without any adverse effect on egg production.
• Sorghum varieties with high levels of tannin are very unpalatable to pigs, but specific recommendations cannot be made. The use of high tannin sorghum should be avoided if possible and those wishing to use them should seek nutritional advice.
• For best results the whole grain should be cracked or coarsely ground. Otherwise some grains will pass through the animal.
• It is recommended that sorghum be analysed for protein content to allow selection of the correct amino acid content for diet formulation.
LIMITATIONS
The tannin content of sorghum used in the diets for meat chickens must be less than 0.1 percent. This is a reasonable guide when feeding sorghum to other species also. An adequate supply of choline and methionine is required. Maximum levels of sorghum in feed will vary for each animal type and age.
