Laser hair removal FAQ

Q: How does laser hair removal work?
A: During the laser treatment the laser light safely and gently passes through the dermis, allowing the light to be absorbed into the hair root destroying the follicle cells so they can no longer produce hair. The energy from the light emitted is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair. Although hair re-growth has been prevented the laser does not injure the surrounding skin and the procedure is virtually pain-free.

Laser light is transmitted only 1-5 millimeters into the skin. The laser targets the pigment located in the hair follicle and shaft. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and this energy is converted to heat which results in damage to the hair follicle. Because of the highly selective action of the laser light, the hair removal procedure actually works as a two-step process. It is easy to eliminate a hair shaft and its root. Waxing, tweezing and depilatory creams affect only the hair, not the papilla. For permanent results, the capillaries in the papilla must be disabled. This is accomplished when sufficient heat has built up in the hair bulb (via the attraction of the laser light) to disable the capillaries in the papilla.

Q: What are the benefits of laser hair removal?
A:Laser hair removal is a safe, effective, convenient and efficient way to get rid of your unwanted hair.Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, only take 20 minutes.

Q: How often do I come in for treatment?
A:  Since your hair grows in intervals of 3 cycles, we recommend waiting 4-6 weeks in between treatments until your desired result is achieved. Since the laser affects only those hairs in the growing stage, and not all hairs will be in this stage at the same time, several treatments will most likely be needed to effectively remove all the hair from one area.

Q: Is hair removal permanent?
A:Laser hair removal is a method of permanently getting the rid of 99.8% of unwanted hair on a chosen area over a period of 6-8 sessions. At the end of the treatments the remaining 0.2% is so fine that it is hardly visible to the eye.  Some hair growth may appear after 7-9 treatments but it will be thinner, lighter in color and grow at a much slower rate than before.

Q: What are the treatments like?

A:Some say it feel like small elastic bands slapping against the skin, while others don’t feel a thing. During the procedure you’ll feel the lasers gentle light on the skin as the laser is absorbed by the hair follicles. Each pulse of the laser lasts a fraction of a second and treats an area of approximately ½ inch up to 4″ depending on which hand piece is used. Our lasers are equipped with a cooling system to decrease skin temperature to preventing burns from the heat generated by the laser.

Q: How long does the treatment take?
A: The treatment time can vary considerably depending on the size of the area treated, and the density of the hair. A small area such as the upper lip may take only five minutes, while a larger area like the back or legs may take from 30 minutes to one hour depending on which laser is used.

Q: What should I do before my treatment?
A:1.Avoid sun exposure and tanning products for 1-2 weeks before treatment.2.Shave the area to be treated with a razor 8-24 hours prior to treatment.3.Remove all makeup and lotions.4.If you are having your underarms treated, please try to refrain from using underarm deodorant.

Q: What will I need to do after treatment?
A: Although you can resume your normal activities, you should avoid exposing the treated area to the sun for at least 1 week post your treatment.  If you must be in the sun, use a 45 to 50 SPF sunscreen. Clean the area with mild soap and water and do not use any products that may irritate the skin. Occasionally, following the procedure the area may be red or swollen, as if mildly sunburned. You’ll notice hair “growing” in the area within ten days of your treatment. This is actually the damaged hair falling out, rather than re-growth. You may shave these hairs if they bother you, but do not wax, tweeze, or bleach hairs between sessions.
