P20 tool steel is ideally suited for the production of plastic moulds. Typical applications include die holders, zinc die casting dies, backers, bolsters and injection moulds. The versatility of P20 tool steel with its high tensile characteristics enables uses for a variety of other applications such as shafts, rails and wear strips
Heat slowly, allowing sufficient time for the steel to become heated through. Begin forging at 1050°C. Do not forge below 930°C reheating if necessary. After forging, cool very slowly.
Heat uniformly to 770-790°C. Soak well, cool slowly in the furnace. |
When dies are heavily machined, we recommend stabilising just before finish machining in order to relieve machining strains. Heat to 460-500°C. Soak well and allow to cool in the air.
Heat the steel uniformly to 820-840°C until heated through. Quench in oil.
Heat uniformly and soak at the tempering temperature for at least one hour per 25mm of section. Allow to cool in still air.

In general, we do not advise the welding of tool steel but users sometimes prefer to weld in order to avoid the cost of retooling. It should be remembered that this grade is an air hardening steel and that in welding the area of the weld attains a temperature of about 1000°C. Cracking is likely to occur during cooling unless proper precautions are taken. Popular methods of welding are atomic hydrogen and argon arc. We recommend you contact your welding consumables supplier who should provide you full assistance and information on welding tool steels.
Welding Procedure
1) It is desirable to anneal the tool prior to welding but with care welding may be done on hardened and tempered tools.
2) It is important to preheat the die to 300-500°C and to maintain this temperature during welding.
3) After the weld has been completed, maintain at 300-500°C for one hour, then cool the die slowly in a furnace or in insulating material.
4) If the tool has been annealed prior to welding, stress relieve at 700°C before re-hardening.
5) If the tool has not been annealed prior to welding, re-temper at 550-600°C for a minimum of 2 hours.
The steel may be nitrided to give a wear resistant case of approximately Rockwell C60 surface hardness with a case depth of 0.35mm to 0.5mm. Nitriding P20 tool steel also increases the corrosion resistance. After nitriding at 525°C in ammonia gas the surface hardness of the P20 will be approximately 650HV.
Temperature | Time | Approx. Depth of Case |
525ºC | 20 hours | 0.30mm |
525ºC | 40 hours | 0.35mm |
525ºC | 60 hours | 0.50mm |
At 570ºC tufftriding of P20 tool steel will give a surface hardness of approximately 700HV. Allowing two hours treatment the surface hard layer will be approximately 0.1mm.
Select the correct grade of wheel in consultation with the grinding wheel manufacturer. Ensure the grinding wheel is in good condition by means of a suitable dressing tool. Wet grinding is a preferable option using a copious supply of coolant. If dry grinding is resorted to then use a very soft wheel.
