Characteristics of tool material is the major factor to influence the surface quality after machining, efficiency, and tool life. It affords the direct cutting work during machining. Mostly the cutting performance depends on the materials of cutting edge, the geometric parameters and the choice of the tool structure and design. The productivity, tool life, tool consumption, processing costs, machining accuracy, and surface quality,..etc., almost depends on the choice of tool materials.
Carbide is made of difficult-to-fuse metal carbides (eg. WC, TiC, TaC, NbC, etc.) and the metal binder (eg. Co, Ni, etc.) powder by metallurgy method. It is with high hardness, good wear resistance, high heat resistance, and allowing higher cutting speed, several times higher than high-speed steel, but its strength and toughness are lower than high-speed steel, the craft is not as high-speed steel, so it is often made of various types of blades, welding or mechanical clamping on the turning tools, planer, end mill shank (cutter body).
In addition to the carbon and tungsten, of course it’s also plus cobalt and other alloys to increase its mechanical properties. Tungsten carbide is very hard, so it is often used to make cutting tools. The mechanical properties of tungsten steel consists of two parts, the first part is the cobalt content, which higher the content means the lower hardness, but the toughness is better; and the other is the powder particle size, the smaller the more wear-resistance, however it is more costly.
Coating of Cutter
The coating delivers a variety of benefits to extend tool life, including :
High speed machining is always high temperature machining. Coating protects the tool by acting as a thermal barrier. It provides unparalleled performance in high temperature machining.
High-temperature cutting with coating encourages the formation of a useful outer layer of aluminum oxide. This layer is both hard and slick. While the hardness helps with wear resistance, the slickness lubricates the hot chip to help it slide away without adhesion or heat transfer.
A high performance coating which excellent at machining of abrasive and difficult-to-machine and harden materials such as cast iron, aluminum alloys, tool steels, graphite, titanium alloys and nickel alloys. Its abrasion resistance makes it effective for machining work materials.
The Titanium Aluminum nitride Coating, with purple black in color, is an effective coating for a wide variety of HSM applications.Effective coating for most applications. With benefits of high-temperature & abrasion resistance, extending tool life, and lubricity for chip removal. Great for dry machining and harden materials. Specialized in HSM applications.
This coating , with silver color and multi-layers, has superior performance on cutting stainless steel and difficult-to-cut materials.
Diamond like Carbon, tough coating for milling non-ferrous materials. Diamond is intrinsic hardness results in long wear characteristics for increasing production Available upon request.
Coating treatment must be in proper arrangement in order to play a high-performance under the conditions of usage. Hence, we must understand the coating characteristics, and then applied to thecutting tool to achieve better results.
Depositing TiC, TiN, TiCN, Al2O3 ... hard ceramic coating with a few μm on carbide tool is more suitable for high speed machining than WC series, and with higher feed strength than ceramic.
