Principle of Electrodialysis

Electrodialysis (ED) is a membrane separation process which bases on the pulse of potential difference by using the counter ion migration theory of charged ionic membrane to separate charged ions from aqueous solution and other electrically neutral components under the effect of direct current field. Multiple sets ofcationand anion exchange membranes which are arranged alternately and  placed within the electrodialyzer, and with the action of direct current field the anion moves through anionic membrane to the cathode direction and cationmoves through cationic membrane to the anode direction. Therefore, forming a fresh water chamber by ion removal and concentrating a strong water chamber by salt removal from the solution. Solution in fresh water chamber and strong water chamber is used for different purposes. This process is the principle of electrodialysis desalination and concentration.
