The Huawei C&C08 Digital SPC Switching System, developed by Huawei Technologies, has a large capacity and complies with International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) recommendations and its supplements. Also, it complies with the European Telecommunications Standards (ETS). It provides integrated solutions to access the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), Intelligent Network (IN), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and the Internet helping in the phenomenal growth and development of the telecom networks. The C&C08 Digital SPC Switching System (referred to as the C&C08 Switch hereinafter) has the following characteristics.
High-Level Integration
The C&C08 Switch integrates the narrowband and broadband services of the switching and transmission systems, into one compact and reliable system.
It integrates built-in STM-1 optical/electronical transmission system with transparent transmission across different switching equipment, which is a major breakthrough from the timeworn concept of separating transmission from switching. It improves the system performance and reduces the equipment cost and maintenance expenditure at the same time.
The C&C08 Switch adopts an open network platform, offering all-round support to various services provided by the PSTN, IN, ISDN and thus providing a unified Service Switching Platform (SSP) for the IN.
The C&C08 Switch reduces the cost significantly by using only nine racks to achieve a capacity of 100,000 trunks. It requires less space for the equipment and less stringent infrastructure requirement for the equipment room. The power consumption is also much less.

The C&C08 Switch provides a maximum of 800,000 subscriber interfaces or 180,000 trunk interfaces.
Flexibility in Networking
The C&C08 Switch adopts a modular structure, which makes it flexible enough for networking, thus meeting all kinds of networking demands. As shown in Figure 1-1.
The C&C08 Switch provides a variety of modules for networking modes like Switching Module (SM), Enhanced Switching Module (ESM), Remote Switching Module (RSM), Remote Subscriber Access Module (RSA) and Service Processing Module (SPM) that is capable of supporting a large number of trunk circuits.
The C&C08 Switch has all the connection functions of an international switch, toll switch, local switch, tandem switch and end switch. It can be used in digital networks, analog networks or in a digital-analog network.
It has the following other characteristics.
It supports No. 7 signaling, V5 signaling, R2 signaling, No. 5 signaling, and so on.
With the No. 7 signaling, it supports fixed and mobile Telephone User Part (TUP) and ISDN User Part (ISUP), the Signaling Connection Control Part (SCCP) and Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP) protocols.
It provides E1s and T1s at a switch.
It automatically identifies the 24-bit and 14-bit No. 7 signaling point codes.
It provides Signaling Point (SP), integrated Signaling Transfer Point (STP) and independent STP functions.
The C&C08 Switch accesses data networks (such as Internet, Packet Switched Public Data Network (PSPDN), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)), multimedia network and subscriber access network by supporting ISDN, V5, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP), X.25, X.75, and other signaling protocols. In this way, it realizes narrowband and broadband services such as data communications, videoconferencing, multimedia communications, Video On Demand (VOD), tele-medication and tele-education.
As an SSP, the C&C08 Switch can be adopted in building Intelligent Networks, which support independent intelligent peripherals.
For various private communication networks, the C&C08 Switch provides the function, by which one switch can access multiple networks through a variety of inter-network interfaces.
Integrated OM Center and NM Platform
The integrated operations & maintenance center (OM center) and Network Management platform (NM platform) of the C&C08 Switch provides visual Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) and complies with ITU-T recommendations for Man-Machine Language (MML). It accesses workstations through TCP/IP or RS-232 series interfaces, to implement both multi-point and remote maintenance.
The C&C08 integrated NM platform provides open interfaces to connect with its own higher-level NM center, or other Telecom Management Network (TMN) systems, to carry out such functions as supervising the service traffic of the whole network in a unified way, monitoring and analyzing the service performance, and dispatching the network circuits of the whole network in a unified way. These are carried out, so as to implement functions, such as remote fault management, remote performance management, remote equipment operations & maintenance, accounting management and security management.
The C&C08 integrated OM center is connected with the switch through the Ethernet. It has remote and concentrated maintenance interfaces, providing functions such as data management, billing management, traffic statistics, alarm processing, system maintenance, test diagnosis and online help, thereby implementing a consistent and reliable switching system operation management.
Flexible and Comprehensive Service Provision Capability
The network service provision capability is usually constrained by the existing switching equipment. To cater for the ever-increasing demands for various services, the existing network equipment usually needs to be upgraded. However, the equipment stability would be jeopardized by the continuous increase of services. The C&C08 Switch combines switching and standard intelligent network techniques to isolate the service provision from the switching sphere. By this, it provides various supplementary services, value-added services and intelligent services, without upgrading or changing the existing network structure.
The operators can generate, create and modify services with specific characteristics at the service creation platform based on their needs and provide subscribers with a variety of services as swiftly as possible.
The C&C08 Switch solves not only the discrepancy between the incessant service demands and the frequent equipment addition and upgradation, but also that between the diversity and distinctiveness of local network services and the comprehensive nature of the whole network service. By taking care of these, the stability and reliability of the entire network is fully ensured.
High Reliability
The C&C08 Switch has implemented thorough and systematic measures in both its software and hardware design to ensure high reliability. These are described below.
Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of the system is 22.39 years and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) is 0.5 hour. The recovery time of the system is less than three minutes.
