Linseed oil is a triglyceride, like other fats. Linseed oil is distinctive in terms of fatty acid constituents of the triglyceride, which contain an unusually large amount of α-linolenic acid, which has a distinctive reaction toward oxygen in air. Specifically, the constituent fatty acids in a typical linseed oil are of the following types:

  • The triply unsaturated α-linolenic acid (55.2%),
  • The saturated acids palmitic acid (7%) and stearic acid (3.7%),
  • The monounsaturated oleic acid (18.5%),
  • The doubly unsaturated linoleic acid (15.6%)

  Flaxseed oil benefits and usage

Lower cholesterol, protect against heart disease and control high blood pressure, Counter inflammation associated with gout, lupus . Control constipation and gallstones .

  Working principle:

 (1) Lower cholesterol, protect against heart disease and control high blood pressure:

Several studies indicate that flaxseed oil, as well as ground flaxseeds, can lower cholesterol, thereby significantly reducing the risk of heart disease. Taking flaxseed oil may also protect against angina (chest pain) and high blood pressure. In addition, a five-year study done recently at Boston's Simmons College found that flaxseed oil may be useful in preventing a second heart attack.

(2) Counter inflammation associated with gout, lupus and fibrocystic breasts:

Omega-3 fatty acids appear to limit the inflammatory reaction associated with these conditions. In cases of lupus, flaxseed oil not only reduces inflammation in the joints, skin and kidneys, but also lowers cholesterol levels that may be elevated by the disease. Taking flaxseed oil for gout may lessen the often sudden and severe joint pain or swelling that is a symptom of this condition. In addition, the ability of omega-3 fatty acids to boost the absorption of iodine (a mineral often found in low levels in women suffering from fibrocystic breasts) makes flaxseed oil potentially valuable for treating this often painful condition

Benefit for skin:   Flaxseed oil is also applied to the skin to sooth irritations or soften roughness .

Benefiet for production: flaxseed oil is used as an ingredient in paints, varnishes, linoleum, and soap; and as a waterproofing

use for food:In foods, flaxseed oil is used as cooking oil and in margarines, It can be taken directly or it can be used as an ingredient in salads, cereals or cooked vegetables. It can also be mixed with yogurt or combined with a blender drink.

  Production process and storage

Note that flaxseed oil can easily break down chemically if exposed to light, heat, or air. Flaxseed oil should be stored in a frosted bottle and protected from heat. It can be stored in the refrigerator.
