Upholstered furniture AS/NZS 3744.1 test – standard range:
This part of AS 3744 is one of a series of standards regarding the flammability of upholstered furniture using different ignition sources.
The ignition source used in this part is a smoldering cigarette.
More sections are planned to be published, taking advantage of a growing range of ignition sources.
Part 2 will use a gas flame representing a matched equivalent flame as the first step in the series,
and other parts are expected to expand the range by using larger gas flames and wooden frames or filled paper bags.
Upholstered furniture AS/NZS 3744.1 test – test principle:
Place the decorative material components under a smoldering cigarette ignition source.
This component is set up to represent the connection between the seat and the backrest (or seat and arms) in a stylized form,
such as the connection that might occur in a typical chair.
The flammability of components is determined by using a smoker's material, such as a cigarette.
This test method measures the flammability of monolithic composites built on test benches, i.e. coverings, linings, filler materials, etc.
Results must not be stated as applying to the general performance of any individual part.
Note: The test only measures the flammability of the combination of materials used in upholstered seats,
not the flammability of specific finished furniture that contains these materials.
They indicate, but do not guarantee, the ignition performance of the finished furniture.
Upholstered furniture AS 3744.1 test - standard name:
AS/NZS 3744.1:1998 Furniture - Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture-Part 1 ignition source: smouldering cigarette
AS/NZS 3744.1:1998 Furniture – Assessment of flammability of upholstered furniture – Part 1: Ignition sources – Simmering
Upholstered furniture AS 3744.1 test – Ignition criteria (progressive smoldering ignition):
For the purposes of this section of AS 3744, all of the following types of behaviors are considered progressive smoldering ignition:
a) Any test component that exhibits escalating combustion behavior that makes it unsafe to continue testing will need to be actively extinguished;
b) smoldering for the duration of the test until basic consumption of any test components;
c) for the duration of the test, smoldering to the end of the specimen, i.e. the upper or lower edge, both sides or its full thickness;
d) Any test component that, upon final inspection, shows signs of scorching other than discoloration,
exceeding 100 mm in any direction in the part closest to the original location of the source.
