Compared with ordinary motors, variable frequency motors do not have much difference in appearance, but there are significant differences in performance and usage between the two. Variable frequency motors are powered by variable frequency power sources or frequency converters, and the speed of the motor can vary. There are constant torque and constant power variable frequency motors, while ordinary motors are powered by power frequency power sources, and their rated speed is relatively fixed.
The ordinary motor fan rotates simultaneously with the motor rotor, while the variable frequency motor relies on another axial flow fan for heat dissipation. The speed of the fan is fixed, which can ensure the heat dissipation requirements of the motor during low-speed operation. Therefore, when ordinary fans are used with frequency conversion and run at low speeds, they may burn out due to overheating.
In addition, due to the need to withstand high-frequency magnetic fields, the insulation level of variable frequency motors is higher than that of ordinary motors. There are special requirements for slot insulation and electromagnetic wires of variable frequency motors to improve their resistance to high-frequency shock waves.
Variable frequency motors can adjust speed within their speed range without damage, while general power frequency motors can only operate under rated voltage and frequency conditions. Some motor manufacturers have designed broadband ordinary motors with a small adjustment range, which can ensure the use of frequency conversion in a small range, but the range should not be too large, otherwise the motor may be burned out due to heating.
