Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a nonionic cellulose ether prepared by a series of chemical processing using natural polymer materials as raw materials.
It contains almost all the properties of methyl cellulose (MC) and is your first choice for the production of quality building materials. In the production of building materials, cellulose ether is an indispensable additive. After adding HPMC, the following performance can be improved:

1. Water retention - enhance water retention, improve the phenomenon of excessive hardening and cracking caused by excessive drying and hydration of cement and gypsum building materials.
2. Workability - increase the plasticity of the mortar, improve the industrial properties of the construction coating, and improve work efficiency;
3. Adhesion - due to the improved plasticity of the mortar, it can better bond the substrate and the adherend;
4. Anti-sliding - due to its thickening effect, it can prevent the occurrence of mortar and adherent slip during construction.

1. Appearance: HPMC is white or off-white fiber granular powder, odorless.
2. Solubility: HPMC is almost insoluble in absolute ethanol, ether, acetone, and dissolves in cold water into a clear or slightly turbid gel. HPMC is soluble in some organic solvents and can also be dissolved in a mixed solvent of water and organic solvent.
3. Particle size: 100 mesh pass rate ≥ 98.5%, 80 mesh pass rate 100%.
4. Apparent density: 0.30-0.70g/cm3, density 1.26-1.31g/cm3.

1. Salt resistance: HPMC is a nonionic cellulose ether and is not a polyelectrolyte. Therefore, it is relatively stable in an aqueous solution in the presence of a metal salt or an organic electrolyte, but an excessive amount of an electrolyte may cause gelation and precipitation.
2. Surface activity: HPMC aqueous solution has surface active function and can be used as colloidal protective agent, emulsifier and dispersing agent.
3. Thermal gel: When heated to a certain temperature, the HPMC aqueous solution becomes opaque, gel, and forms a precipitate, but when it is continuously cooled, it returns to the original solution state, and the temperature of the gel and precipitate occurs. Mainly depends on their type, concentration and heating rate.
4. PH-stability: The viscosity of the HPMC aqueous solution is hardly affected by acid or alkali, and the pH is relatively stable in the range of 3.0-11.0.
5. Water retention: HPMC is a highly effective water retention agent with a wide range of applications in ceramics, building materials and many other applications.
6. Adhesion: HPMC is used as a high performance binder in pigments, paper, tobacco and ceramic products.

dissolution method:

HPMC products are added directly to the water. It will produce agglomeration and then dissolve, but this dissolves slowly and is difficult. Three dissolution methods are suggested below. Users can choose the most convenient method based on usage:
1. Hot water method: Add 1/3 or 2/3 of the required amount of water to the vessel and heat it to above 80 °C, since HPMC is not dissolved in hot water. Thus, the initial HPMC can be uniformly dispersed in the hot water; then the remaining amount of cold water or ice water is added to the hot water slurry, and the mixture is cooled after stirring.
2. Powder mixing method: HPMC powder particles are mixed with equal or larger amounts of other powdery ingredients by dry mixing, and then dissolved by adding water, at which time HPMC can be dissolved without agglomeration.
3. Organic solvent wetting method: HPMC is pre-dispersed or wetted with an organic solvent such as ethanol, ethylene glycol or oil, and then dissolved by adding water. At this time, HPMC can also be dissolved smoothly.

Note: After surface treatment of HPMC can be wetted with cold water, add ammonia or alkaline water to adjust the pH to 8-10 to form viscosity.

 The main purpose

HPMC can be used as a thickener, dispersant, emulsifier and film former. Its industrial grade products can be used in household chemicals, synthetic resins, construction and coatings.

1. Suspension polymerization:

In the production of synthetic resins, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylidene chloride and other copolymers, suspension polymerization is most commonly used and it is necessary to stabilize the hydrophobic monomer suspended in water. As a water-soluble polymer, HPMC products have excellent surface activity and act as a colloidal protective agent, which can effectively prevent aggregation of polymerized particles.
Further, although HPMC is a water-soluble polymer, it is also slightly soluble in the hydrophobic monomer, and increases the porosity of the monomer for producing the polymerized particles, so that it can provide a good removal residue of the polymer. Body and the ability to enhance the absorption of plasticizers.
