One type of brake pad is the semi-metallic brake pad, often referred to as just “metallic brake pad”. Metallic brake pads are comprised of anywhere between 30% and 70% metals including copper, iron, steel, or other composite alloys. These various metals are combined with graphite lubricant as well as other fillers to complete the brake bad.

 The metallic brake pad compounds that are available vary, with each offering their own advantages for different situations as diverse as daily commutes to track racing.For many drivers, especially those who value high-performance, the choice between ceramic vs. metallic brake pads is easy. Performance-driven drivers prefer the metallic brake pads because they offer improved braking performance in a much wider range of temperatures and conditions. Because metals are such a good conductor of heat, they tend to be able to withstand more heat while simultaneously helping braking systems cool back down more quickly. They also don’t compress as much as organic brakes, meaning less pressure needs to be applied to the brake pedal to affect stopping ability.

However, there are some disadvantages to metallic brake pads. They tend to be noisier than ceramic or organic brake pads - meaning a louder ride - as well as more stressful for the brake system, adding more strain and wear on the brake rotors. As far as price goes, metallic brake pads tend to fall somewhere between organic and ceramic pads. They tend to produce more brake dust than the other two varieties as well.

Another option for brake pads are ceramic brake pads. These brake pads are made from ceramic very similar to the type of ceramic used to make pottery and plates, but is denser and a lot more durable. Ceramic brake pads also have fine copper fibers embedded within them, to help increase their friction and heat conductivity.Since they were developed in the mid-1980s, ceramic brake pads have been consistently increasing in popularity for a number reasons:

Noise-Level: Ceramic brake pads are very quiet, creating little-to-no extra sound when the brakes are applied.

Wear & Tear Residue: Compared to organic brake pads, ceramic brake pads tend to produce less dust and other particles over time as they wear down.

Temperature & Driving Conditions: Compared to organic brake pads, ceramic brake pads can be more reliable in a wider range of temperatures and driving conditions.

But, as with most things, there is some “give” that comes with the “take”; ceramic brake pads do have some limitations. Primarily, their cost: due to higher manufacturing costs, ceramic brake pads tend to be the most expensive of all types of brake pad. Also, since both ceramic and copper can’t absorb as much heat as other types of materials, more of the heat generated by braking will pass through the brake pads and into the rest of the braking system. This can cause more wear and tear on other braking components. Lastly, ceramic brake pads aren’t considered the best choice for extreme driving conditions, such as very cold climates or racing conditions.

Drum vs. Disc Brake pad

Both drum and disc braking systems primarily rely on resistance to stop a vehicle. Friction is converted into heat, which ultimately works to stop the vehicle in motion. After that point, the characteristics of each type become more marked.

Drum Brake System Facts:

   1.  Primarily used until the early 1970s, but still used for rear brake systems on many new vehicles

   2.Less expensive for the manufacturer, and replacement shoes are usually very affordable

   3.Made from cast iron, with all of the components located within the “drum”

   4.Design simplifies replacement; work can be completed in less than 5 minutes

   5.Good performance in wet conditions (less likely to get wet in the first place)

   6.Shoes fade more over time than pads used on discs



Disc Brake System Facts:

1.Superior heat dissipation, which means they’re more resistant to brake fade during during, racing, etc.

2.Greater possible clamping force, larger swept area, and better cooling ultimately makes for a better brake system

3.Greater cost to manufacture, and more expensive to service/maintain

Brake Pad Price Range Info

Proper brake maintenance is vital to ensure optimal performance. Brake pads don’t last forever, and should be replaced between 30,000 to 70,000 miles. Replacement parts should be of the same quality as the pads installed by the manufacturer, therefore it’s important to choose original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts when selecting replacements. These parts are an inexpensive and will improve the safety of your Automobile ability to stop effectively.

Here’s what you can expect to pay for a set of quality brake pads (OEM is best, premium brand is second best):

     1.      A set of front or rear brake pads should cost $50 to $150, with most falling between $50 and $75. The higher priced pads will be found on performance vehicles for the most part

     2.     A set of rear brake shoes (it’s rare to find shoes on the front of today’s vehicles) should cost about the same, $50-$75, which very few situations where shoes would cost more.

     3.    Installation costs can range dramatically, from $50 to $200. It’s going to depend on the shop, the type of vehicle you drive, etc.

How to Maximize Brake Pad Life

There are several factors that contribute to the longevity (or lack thereof) of brake pads. Driving style is a prime indicator of how much life drivers can get out of their brake pads. Other factors include road conditions, terrain and driving frequency. Practice the tips below to prolong the pads in your vehicle.

1.    Slow Down – Accelerated speeds do a number on brake pads.

2.    Use Only One Foot to Drive – Using both feet to drive is a formula for premature brake wear, as you’re more likely to rest your foot on the brake pedal than drivers who just use one foot.

3.    Coast Rather Than Brake (when possible) – If you can plan ahead and follow from a good distance, you’ll find yourself touching the brakes a lot less. You’ll also save money on fuel.

4.    Remove Extra Weight From Your Vehicle – If you need and excuse for kicking your in-laws out of the car, you’re welcome.

5.    Invest in Quality Pads – Cheap and/or “free lifetime replacement” brake pads are intentionally designed to wear fast. The faster they wear, the faster you’ll be back to the brake shop, and the more changes they have to sell you additional services.
