Descriptions of NA204 bearings 

A pillow block, also known as a plummer block or bearing housing, is a pedestal used to provide support for a rotating shaft with the help of compatible bearings & various accessories. Housing material for a pillow block is typically made of cast iron or cast steel.

Pillow blocks are usually referred to the housings which have a bearing fitted into them & thus the user need not purchase the bearings separately. Pillow blocks are usually mounted in cleaner environments & generally are meant for lesser loads of general industry. These differ from "plummer blocks" which are bearing housings supplied without any bearings & are usually meant for higher load ratings & corrosive industrial environments. However the terms pillow-block & plummer-block are used interchangeably in certain parts of the world.

The fundamental application of both types is the same which is to primarily mount bearings safely enabling their outer ring to be stationary while allowing rotation of the inner ring. The housing is bolted to a foundation through the holes in the base. Bearing housings are either split type or unsplit type. Split type housings are usually two piece housings where the cap and base can be detached, while certain series are one single piece housings. Various seals are provided to prevent dust and other contaminants from entering the housing. Thus the housing provides a clean environment for the expensive bearings to freely rotate, hence increasing their performance and duty cycle.

Bearing housings are usually made of grey cast iron. However various grades of metals can be used to manufacture the same.

The pillow block ball bearing is composed of a single row deep groove ball bearings with seals at both sides and spherical outside surface and a housing, suitable for simple support, widely used in various of mechanical equipment, especially for agricultural, metallurgical, textile, and printing machinery.

Special Note on Location of Bearings in Pillow Blocks

If the bearing is to be held (located), fixing rings are inserted

between the side faces of the outer ring and the housing

shoulders. If an adapter sleeve is used to secure the bearing

to the shaft and only one fixing ring is required, it should be

placed on the same side of the bearing as the locknut. The

bearing is then displaced from its central position in the housing by a distance equal to half the fixing ring width.

1 ring - on the same side as the sleeve nut

2 rings - one on each side of the bearing

3 rings - two on the same side as the sleeve nut

4 rings - two on each side of the bearing

The method of bearing installation:

(1) cleaning bearings and related components;

(2) check the connected components of size and finishing machining;
(3) installation
(4) inspection of the bearings after installed;
(5) the supply of lubricant. 

Working principle :

Pillow blocks, the most commonly used type of mounted units, are designed to provide shaft support

where the mounting surface is parallel to the shaft axis. The bolt holes are usually slotted for adjustment during mounting.

Pillow blocks are supplied in a variety of configurations. Pressed steel pillow block bearings are also available for lightduty 

applications.
