Tapered roller bearing are bearings that can take large axial forces (i. e., they are good ) as well as being able to sustain large radial forces.
The inner and outer ring raceways are segments of cones and the rollers are also made with a taper so that the conical surfaces of the raceways and the roller axes if projected, would all meet at a common point on the main axis of the bearing.
This conical geometry is used as it gives a larger contact patch, which permits greater loads to be carried than with spherical (ball) bearings, while the geometry means that the tangential speeds of the surfaces of each of the rollers are the same as their raceways along the whole length of the and no differential scrubbing occurs. When a roller slides rather than rolls, it can generate wear at the roller-to-race interface, i. e. The differences in surface speeds creates a scrubbing action. Wear will degenerate the close tolerances normally held in the bearing and can lead to other problems. Much closer to pure rolling can be achieved in a tapered roller bearing and this avoids rapid wear.
The rollers are guided by a flange on the inner ring. This stops the rollers from sliding out at high speed due to their momentum.
The larger the half angles of these cones the larger the axial force that the bearing can sustain.
Tapered roller bearings are separable and have the following components: Outer ring, inner ring, and roller assembly (containing the rollers and a cage). The non-separable inner ring and roller assembly is called the cone, and the outer ring is called the cup. Internal clearance is established during mounting by the axial position of the cone relative to the cup.

Single row tapered roller bearings can bear radial load and single direction axial load.When the
bearing has radial load to bear, it will produce an axial component,therefore, to be balanced by another bearing which can withstand axial force from the opposite direction.The capacity to bear axial load of single row bearings depends on the
contact angle,that is,
the outer ring raceway angle.The larger the angle, the greater the axial load capacity.
a. Tapered Roller Bearings, according to the row number of rollers, are defined as single row, double row and four rows. The single row tapered roller bearings clearance should be adjusted when they are mounted. For double row and four row tapered roller bearings, the clearance can be provided when assembling them according to national standards, customers don't need to adjust it.
b. The tapered roller bearings mainly carry radial, axial combined load with radial load in the main. The capacity of axial load carrying depends on the contact angle of outer rings' raceway. The bigger the contact angle is, the greater the capacity will be.
Single-row tapered roller bearings
Able to carry radial and axial load in one direction simultaneously.
Because an axial component of force is produced when this type of bearing is loaded radially, two bearings are used together facing one another, or two or more bearings are matched and used.
There are the standard, medium and steep type which are different in contact angle size. Medium-tapered metric series bearings are identified by the supplementary code "C" which is added as a suffix to bearing numbers.
Bearings whose cup width, cup small inside diameter and contact angle are determined in accordance with ISO 355 specifications are identified by the supplementary code "J" as a suffix.
Cone assemblies and the cups of such bearings are inter-changeable with those of bearings produced abroad if the bearing numbers are the same.
Double-row tapered roller bearings
These bearings are divided into the TDO type which has one double cup and two single-row cones, and the TDI type which has two single-row cups and one double cone.
Both accommodate radial and axial loading in both directions.
These two also carry moment loads, however, the TDO type is superior to the TDI type, because the distance between load centers is longer in the TDO type.
The spacer of the TDO type, or the TDI type, pre-adjusts the internal clearance to provide proper operating clearance after mounting.

Metric and inch size bearings are available. Designs with a K in the designation have inch dimensions. For new designs, however, bearings in metric sizes should always be used in preference.

These bearings have improved surfaces, a higher performance combination of material and heat treatment as well as an optimised contact geometry. This improves the friction behaviour and increases the basic dynamic load rating. Under the same operating conditions, a significant increase in basic rating life is achieved. For certain applications, this means that a smaller bearing arrangement can be designed.
