Ceramic Bearings

Bearings can be manufactured from a range of different materials including hardened Chrome Molly Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium. Until recently Titanium bearings were the hardest and longest lasting, however, Ceramic bearings are now available for the cost of a good steel bearing. Ceramic materials are noted for their high strength, good durability, high rigidity, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, electrical insulation and non-magnetic properties. Care must be taken when choosing a ceramic bearing as there are a number of different ceramic materials and manufacturing processes on the market - not all of which are suitable for sk8board use.

Common Ceramic materials include: Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄), Zirconia (ZrO₂) and Alumina (Al₂O₃). Black Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄) is the material of choice for inline and sk8board bearings. Balls made of this material are half the weight and twice as hard as steel balls. Avoid buying (white) ZrO₂ and Al₂O₃ ceramic ball bearings as these are less resistant to crushing and can suffer from catastrophic failure. A properly engineered silicon nitride bearing fails in the same manner as a steel ball through spalling of the ball surface.

Ceramic coated steel ball bearings are available for industrial use. This type of ceramic bearing is not suitable for inline or skateboard use as the ceramic coating can crack and flake off with impact loading. Only buy ceramic bearings made with solid ceramide balls.
