Basic information about Illite
Illite is a common clay mineral, often formed by the weathering of muscovite and potassium feldspar, and is produced in argillaceous rocks or altered by other minerals. It is often an intermediate transitional mineral that forms other clay minerals. Pure illite clay is white, but is often dyed yellow, green, brown, etc. due to impurities.
Its Mohs hardness is 1 to 2.  And the specific gravity is 2.6 to 2.9.
