CORTEN plates are produced from billet castings from blast furnace and hot rolled in a continuous mill for smaller thicknesses and on a four high mill for others.
The purity of the steel of fine grade austenitic quality and the addition of special alloys, provide this steel plates,
excellent mechanical characteristics, even at high temperatures and self-passivating properties when exposed to
corrosive agents present in urban atmosphere. This property allows this steel to face down corrosion for longer
periods when compared to common steel, even if not painted.

Product Application

The mechanical characteristics and the resistance to atmospheric corrosion make this steel, the best product for the fabrication of agricultural vans and railway wagons, structures of bridges, water pipes, fans, chimneys and boilers.
HOT FORMING
This operation may be normally carried out in a temperature range of 800 °C to 1050 °C. If it is required to use a different temperature, it is advisable to carry out a normalizing treatment at the end.
WELDING
COR-TEN A plates can be easily welded using all common procedures used for mild steel plates (spot,TIG, MIG, MAG, electrode etc.). It is however advisable to avoid tempering in the heated zone and therefore to limit the ratio of linear energy to the thickness.
Considering the chemical analysis, it can be stated that COR-TEN A steel is not subject to cold cracking.
welded structures fabricated with COR-TEN A steel does not normally need thermal stress relief treatment.

FLAME CUTTING
This operation can be normally carried out with the usual methods. In general no preheat is required, but operation on plates with a temperature of less than 10 °C shall be avoided.
COLD BENDING
CORTEN A is suitable for very strict bending operations. It is recommended to comply with the
parameters given in the following table:
