Rope quoits developed on ships - sailors used quoits made from rope and either attached a stake to a wall or used an upstanding part of the ship (such as the belaying pin) as a target. Emigrants from England who naturally travelled by sea, took the game of rope quoits to the British colonies where it is still played today - especially in Australia.
