The BDP-S470 model number was conspicuous only by its absence in Sony's CES line-up, where the S370 and S570 were both on display. But worry not, as Sony have now revealed the missing number, and it's going to be their first retail 3D-capable Blu-ray player. Of course, 3D Blu-ray content via disc will be playable, but it has also been announced that online services will be streaming 3D programs, which will be watchable.
The usual array of expected features will be joining the online providers, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio decoding, DVD upscaling, a USB port, SACD playback and compatibility with the Sony BD Remote iPhone app. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the BDP-S470 is the price, an entirely reasonable $200. The player is set to go on sale at the end of February, but without a 3D TV or any 3D Blu-rays on sale, you won't be taking advantage of it for a while yet.
But this isn't the only reason you won't be watching 3D, as the main reason is it won't be activated on your freshly purchased player until a firmware update later in the year. The 3D firmware can also be applied to the aforementioned BDP-S570 plus the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570, blessing them all with three dimensional playback.
It's odd that the S470 wasn't front and centre at CES, and neither was the S570's 3D potential, instead just showing off the expensive-sounding S770. Still, it is here now and if the sensible pricing continues through the TVs and transmitter/glasses range, then 3D may have a fighting chance from the start after all.
