Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) Summary

A nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with an addition of tungsten having excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of severe environments. The high molybdenum content makes the alloy especially resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion. The low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding to maintain corrosion resistance in as-welded structures. Used in pollution control, chemical processing, pulp and paper production, and waste treatment.

Characters:

Hastelloy C-276, is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy containing tungsten and with extremely low carbon and silicon contents, excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive media, under oxidizing and reducing condition, outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking.

Corrosion Resistance:

Hastelloy C-276 can be used in many chemical processes with oxidizing and reducing media. The high molybdenum and  chromium conents render the alloy resistant to chloride ion attack. The tungsten content further increase this resistance. Hastelloy C-276 is one of the few materials that is resistant to moist chlorine gas,  hypochlorite  and chlorine dioxide solutions. The alloy is outstandingly resistant to concentrated  solutions of oxidizing salts  (such as iron chloride and copper chloride).

Applications:

Hastelloy C-276 finds wide application in the chemical and petrochemical industry, for components in organic processes containing chlorides, and for catalytic systems. The material is especially suitable for use in situations where hot, contaminated mineral acids, solutions and organic acids (such as formic and acetic acid) as well as sea water occur. Other fields of application are: 

1. Pulp and paper industry, e.g. for digestion and bleaching vessels;

2. Equipment and components for sour-gas service;

3. Reactors for acetic acid production;

4. Sulphuric acid coolers;

5. Methylene two phenyl isocyanate (MDI)

6. Manufacture and processing of technically impure phosphoric acid.
