IV. Feature:
Butyl acrylate is a colorless liquid with a sharp odor. It is readily miscible with most organic solvents.
It is a flammable liquid and vapor. Its vapors are heavier than air and may travel a long distance and accumulate in low lying areas. It should be kept away from heat, sparks, flame and any sources of ignition.
Butyl acrylate is stable under recommended storage conditions. Elevated temperatures can cause hazardous polymerization, so butyl acrylate has inhibitors added to reduce the probability of polymerization.
V. Process
Butyl acrylate is normally produced by a simple reaction between acrylic acid and n-butanol, with water as a byproduct.
VI. Applications
Butyl acrylate is primarily used in the production of coatings and inks, prints, adhesives, sealants, textiles, plastics and elastomers. Its applications are as below:
1. Coatings – for textiles and adhesives, and for surface and water-based coatings, and coatings used for paints, leather finishing and paper.
2. Paints- for latex paint formulations, acrylic polymers have good water resistance, low temperature flexibility and excellent weathering and sunlight resistance.
3. Adhesives – for use in construction and pressure-sensitive adhesives.
4. Chemical intermediates – for a variety of chemical products, mainly used in the production of homopolymers and co-polymers such as acrylic acid and its salts, esters, amides, methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleates, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene and unsaturated polyesters.
5. Leather – to produce different finishes, particularly nubuck and suede.
6. Textiles – in the manufacture of both woven and non-woven textiles.
7. Plastics – for the manufacture of a variety of plastics.
