This means that the images it captures have a greater range of highlights, shadows, and midtones. The downside, or at least the murkier part of the claim, is that the resulting 12MP files seem to involve some kind of interpolation: If the "R" pixels capture only a limited range of data, then they're not capturing all the data—at least not all 12 megapixels' worth. The actual amount may be as low as 7MP—so in order to reach the 12MP file size, the camera must be manipulating or interpolating the data.
