Physiological Functions
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ 10) or ubiquinone is essentially a fat-soluble vitamin or vitamin-like substance, is found in small amounts in a wide variety of foods and is synthesized in all tissues. CoQ10 plays an important role in the production of chemical energy in the mitochondria. In its reduced form, ubiquinol, CoQ also serves as an antioxidant. Ubiquinol inhibits lipid peroxidation in biological membranes and in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and it also protects membrane proteins against oxidative damage. Research has shown that coenzyme Q10 can provide relief from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and periodontal disease, in addition to stimulation of the immune system and slowing the ageing process, is sold in the US as a dietary supplement.
