4>,Characteristics:
There are many different types of stall mats, varying in terms of materials, size, quality and performance. Selecting the right stall mat requires an evaluation of your requirements against the different options.
- Material. Most stall mats are made of rubber. However, there are some high-tech alternatives such as EVA, which tends to be more expensive but offers the advantage of being lighter, more portable and more shock resistant.
-Size. Mats can be square or rectangular. They can be as small as a square foot, or big enough to entirely cover a stall (12 feet by 12 feet) with a single mat. Small mats are lighter, more portable and easier to work with. They are also cheaper to repair in the case of damage. Large mats have the advantages of staying in place better and less likely to curl up or separate at joins.
- Thickness. Mats are typically between 1cm and 30cm thick. Thicker mats are more expensive, heavier and less portable but tend to be better quality, more resistant to damage, less likely for edges to curl, less likely for joins to separate.
- Interlocking. Mats can either have straight edges or interlocking edges. Interlocking mats tend to stay in place better, are less likely to have edges curl up and tend to have less liquid seep through at joins. For photos of the two types see Horse Stall Mats.
- Quality. Like any product, there are varying qualities. The better quality mats tend to be more expensive, thicker, heavier, made of pure rubber or high-tech alternative. Higher quality mats are more durable.
- Reversible. Some stall mats have a top side and a bottom side, while others can be reversed (flipped over). The advantage of the latter is that when one side shows wear, you can flip them over to extent the lifespan.
