Why do you need a Protein Skimmer?

Excellent water quality is the single most important factor to maintain a healthy and beautiful marine aquarium. To successfully keep marine life your aquarium needs to be free of toxic substances, like ammonia and nitrites. Established reef aquariums can quickly convert ammonia and nitrite into a less toxic substance called nitrate, through a process called the nitrogen cycle. Nitrates are not toxic to fish and invertebrates. However many marine species including corals are very sensitive to nitrates. Only excellent water quality with low nitrate levels will allow corals to successfully thrive. Many hobbyists feel that a protein skimmer is essential for saltwater aquariums, especially reef aquariums or those that are heavily stocked with fish. 

What does a Protein Skimmer do?

Protein skimmers work to actively remove waste produced by fish, plants and inverts, alngside dead organisms and uneaten food. A protein skimmer removes these before it has chance to break down in the aquarium and compromise water quality. Alongside this function, protein skimmersalso have secondary benefits. The other benefits of a protein skimmer are the removal of dissolved waste materials, reducing nitrate build up, they also help to prevent aggressive algae growth. Aprotein skimmer also helps to improve water clarity within your marine aquarium, which in return allows much better light penetration, giving you a brighter, cleaner & clearer marine aquarium. Because a protein skimmer strips a lot of these compounds out of the water column, it allows your filter to work more efficiently, in return, reducing the amount of time you spend on aquarium and filter maintenance.

How do Protein Skimmers work?

A protein skimmer works by creating millions of micro bubbles within a reaction chamber. Organic waste materials become attached to these micro bubble through a chemical process called adsorption. The bubbles then force the waste materials to the surface of the reaction chamber, where the dissolved contaminents and proteins are physically removed from the water column and discharged directly.

By generating many millions of micro bubbles, protein skimmers also help to restore oxygen levels within the aquarium. Increased oxygen levels and gas exchange help promote a stable pH by counteracting the pH-lowering effects of carbon dioxide which generally occur at night.
