The Augusta Canal "DigiTrail" offers visitors a guided tour using QR codes.

In case you haven’t noticed, QR codes—those pixelated-looking little squares—are everywhere. QR codes (QR stands for “quick response”) are starting to appear on everything from print media to t-shirts and wine bottles.

QR codes have been around for a few years, but they started getting more attention when companies stepped up their game and codes actually started to deliver interesting content. Because guess what? Consumers want something of value when they scan a code. Not necessarily monetary value—but something useful. In other words, don’t just send me to your website. I can Google you.

I’m looking forward to finding hiking trails with QR codes like the Augusta Canal DigiTrail in Georgia. Scan the codes along your hike to get an interactive nature tour. My kids will adore it, and it’s a great way for the park to attract visitors. (If you know of any Boston-area hiking trails with QR codes, please tell me about it in the comments!)

The young adult fiction book Shark Wars has a QR code printed right on the back cover. Not a sticker—they actually printed the code on the book. Scan the code and you can download a free game app that accompanies the story. Very cool, a brilliant hook for older kids who may be forgoing books for video games. I’d love to see this on younger kids books as well.

My Skanz QR code bracelet. Snazzy!

You can takes advantage of QR codes’ popularity by creating a way for you to connect your contact information to a code and then “wear” it. Set up your account (it’s in beta right now) and create a profile that has as much (or as little) information you wish to share. Mine has a profile pic, my blog URL, my email address and my twitter handle. Then connect your account to a QR code imprinted on a colorful rubber bracelet and you’ve got the geekiest accessory ever. Who needs a business card? You also makes phone cases, decals and of course allows you to download your code to print anywhere you want.

So then you can go out and purchase a set of coasters, a baby bib …  or if you’re really hard core, get a QR code tattoo.
