As grown, raw carbon nanotubes have highly hydrophobic surfaces, and are not soluble in aqueous solutions. Surface chemistry or functionalization is required to solubilize CNTs, and to render biocompatibility and low toxicity for biomedical applications. Surface functionalization of carbon nanotubes may be covalent or noncovalent. Chemical reactions forming bonds with nanotube sidewalls are carried out in the covalent functionalization case, while non-covalent functionalization exploits favorable interactions between the hydrophobic domain of an amphiphilic molecule and the CNT surface, affording aqueous nanotubes wrapped by surfactant.

1 Introduction

SWCNT are surely the carbon nanotubes variant with the most interesting combination of physical properties. They show world records in mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. 2 Improved Properties

Such cylindrical graphitic polymeric structures have novel or improved properties that make them potentially useful in a wide variety of applications in electronics, optics and other fields of materials science. Carbon nanotubes are endowed with exceptionally high material properties, very close to their theoretical limits, such as electrical and thermal conductivity, strength, stiffness, and toughness. Moreover, MWCNTs are polymers of pure carbon and can be reacted and manipulated using the rich chemistry of carbon. This provides opportunity to modify the structure and to optimise solubility and dispersion, allowing innovative applications in materials, electronics, chemical processing and energy management, to name just a few. In summary, three properties of MWCNTs are specifically interesting for the industry: the electrical conductivity (as conductive as copper), their mechanical strength (Up to 15 to 20 times stronger than steel and 5 times lighter) and their thermal conductivity (same as that of diamond and more than five times that of copper). A combination of these impressive properties enables a whole new variety of useful and beneficial applications.

3  Conclusion

Carbon nanotubes are endowed with exceptionally high material properties, very close to their theoretical limits. Conceptually, the structure of a SWCNT is a one-atom-thick layer of graphite, called graphene, wrapped into a seamless cylinder with either open or closed ends. As their name implies, MWCNTs consist of multiple concentric layers of graphene that form a tube shape.

 

By themselves, CNTs can be metallic or semi-conducting, and are uniquely strong. The many applications for CNTs are based on their unique structure, although some can use either MWCNTs or SWCNTs. MWCNTs are used today in conducting polymers; for example, in electrostatic spray operations. Single-wall Nanotubes (SWNT)

 

 

Single-wall nanotubes (SWNT) are tubes of graphite that are normally capped at the ends. They have a single cylindrical wall. The structure of a SWNT can be visualized as a layer of graphite, a single atom thick, called graphene, which is rolled into a seamless cylinder.

 

Most SWNT typically have a diameter of close to 1 nm. The tube length, however, can be many thousands of times longer.

 

SWNT are more pliable yet harder to make than MWNT. They can be twisted, flattened, and bent into small circles or around sharp bends without breaking.

 

SWNT have unique electronic and mechanical properties which can be used in numerous applications, such as field-emission displays, nanocomposite materials, nanosensors, and logic elements. These materials are on the leading-edge of electronic fabrication, and are expected to play a major role in the next generation of miniaturized electronics.

 

Application:

Many improvements of basic materials properties can be achieved by using carbon nanotubes in polymers and metals as fillers.
