Distribution and Habitat
Occurs on the southernmost parts of Kyushu Island, Japan and the chain of islands which extends to the south, known as the Southern Japanese Archipelago.
Cycas revoluta grows in extensive colonies on hillsides and mountain slopes of limestone origin. These slops are often steep and precipitous and the cycad plants dominate the stunted vegetation. They are fully exposed to sun, salt-laden winds, snow and seasonal cyclones, Droughts are also regular occurrences. Occasional plants occur in more sheltered forested areas, but always on limestone. The prevailing subtropical climate is mild to warm in summer, with temperatures of 26-33 degrees Celsius, and cold in winter, with temperatures of 7-20 degrees Celsius.
Propagation: Fresh seeds should be permitted to age for 2 or 3 months in a cool place before planting. Old, dry seeds should be soaked in water for 24 hours. Plant seeds in moist sand and keep warm. Germination should occur in 2 to 3 months.
