Origami Overview
The ancient art of Japanese paper folding
“Origami” quite literally reads like folding paper, was a Japanese folk art in the 17th century. "Ori" means folded and "kami" means paper. Paper-folding as a traditional folding art pervaded the Japanese culture more strongly than any other.
Origami was first practiced in the Japanese imperial Court, where it was considered an amusing and elegant way of passing the time. Over the centuries the skill has been passed down to ordinary people, who took it up with enthusiasm and made it into the folk art that it is today.
Today in Japan the art of paper-folding is as widely practiced by children, parents and grandparents as it was centuries ago.
Why should you choose our product?
1. Special Paper –Washi Paper in Mino
Traditional craft of Gifu
The beautiful town of Mino is lined with wooden buildings that were built from the Edo era to the Meiji era. The traditional Japanese folk craft of washi papermaking has been passed down in this area. The fibers of washi paper are longer than printing paper, giving it durability despite its thinness and ensuring its longevity. These days, it is used in the repair of cultural assets all over the world, with its strength said to last for 1000 years or more. Washi papermaking began in Mino in the ancient Nara era. Although the culture of washi papermaking exists all over Japan, washi paper from Mino is praised for its quality and durability, earning the shogunate’s endorsement during the Edo era, and it has become a firm favorite.
Minoshi paper is also registered by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage!!!
2. Our Hand-made
Mino Washi paper is made by hand one sheet at a time from mulberry fibers. With a 1300-year history, the many complicated processes of this traditional technique, from preparing the raw materials to spreading the fibers, pressing them, hand-making the paper, and drying it in the sun, are important cultural heritage. There are currently very few craftsmen capable of making Mino Washi paper. They use techniques such as repeatedly rocking the tray back and forth and spreading out the fibers to produce thin, strong paper. Their techniques can be seen reproduced in machine paper-making of Mino Washi Japanese paper.
