Our Mino Washi Japanese Paper
Honminoshi Japanese paper is made by hand one sheet at a time from mulberry fibers. With a 1300-year history, the many complicated processes of this traditional technique, from preparing the raw materials to spreading the fibers, pressing them, hand-making the paper, and drying it in the sun, are important cultural heritage. This led to the process being registered as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in November 2014. There are currently very few craftsmen capable of making Honminoshi Japanese paper. They use techniques such as repeatedly rocking the tray back and forth and spreading out the fibers to produce thin, strong paper. Their techniques can be seen reproduced in machine paper-making of Mino Washi Japanese paper.
