The Coconut Tree or Palm grows on sandy, saline soils and prefers areas with abundant sunlight and regular rainfall. Thus, it generally thrives near beaches - in lowland, tropical and subtropical habitats. However, because of the abundance of the Coconut Palm around the world, finding a definitive proof of its origin has been difficult. Now it is grown in more than 70 countries, but largely in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Maldives.

 

The term coconut dates back to the 16th century. It derives from the Spanish and Portuguese word coco, meaning "a grin", "a monkey face" respectively, since there is a slight resemblance to a human face or a monkey head because of the three tiny indents on the hairy shell of the fruit. Cocos nucifera is a scientific term for the coconut tree, or coconut palm. Botanically, the coconut is a drupe, and not a nut, as many would think. A drupe consists of three layers: the exocarp, mesocarp (which represent the husk of the fruit), and endocarp. The mesocarp contains coir - a seed fiber, utilized in many spheres, for examples, to produce brushes, ropes, fishnets etc. The shell contains one single seed.
