Ferrule:

Ferrule is one of the most important parts for make up brush, because it holds the bristles and connects to the handle. Ferrules are made from plated brass, aluminum, and plastic. But aluminum stands the mostly.

Handle:

Make up brush handles can be made from acrylics, plastic, wooden and bamboo, however, most brush handles are constructed out of wood and bamboo. Makeup brush handles come in a wide variety of colors and shapes. Handle shape and style is more of a personal preference. The type of medium used and the amount of small detail being painted determines the choice of handle length.

Nature hair:

Natural hair brushes can be made from a variety of hair types. Each hair type has specific characteristics that determine the shape of the brush. Professional makeup brushes are made from the highest grade natural hair and are much softer than a lower grade fiber

Nylon hair:

 Synthetic hair brushes allow for smooth application of cream and liquid product, as well as powder. With advancements in synthetic fibers, high quality brushes made with synthetic filaments now mimic the look, feel and performance.

a)        Goat SQ: We call it Goat Shuangqi grade. Or, Regular Goat in English. The cheapest and the lowest quality. It is made by cutting in the middle of the long hair and so it does not have any flag. Hair shaped by cutting machine. Suitable for cheep give away product.

b)        Goat DQ: We call it Goat Duangqi grade. Or, Another Regular Goat in English. 2nd cheapest quality. The root side of the hair is cut. It has many loose hair. Also used for cheap product such as free gift. Usually the hair shaping is done by cutting machine.

c)         Goat #10: The lowest hair quality which we can shape the hair by hand cutting.   Almost no hair flag. One of the lowest quality that can sell in the mass market such as one dollar shop.

d)        Goat TDF: The 2nd lowest hair quality which we can shape the hair by hand cutting.   Not much hair flag. The major goat hair quality that is selling in the mass retailer market such as Walmart, Target Store, Walgreen, and so on. The hair is usually hand cut.

e)        Goat HJF: Most of the hair has flag. The most typical hair quality that can sell in the cosmetics shop. H&M starts from the HJF quality. Much less loose hairs when combed well. It has soft touch when combed. Should be hand cut always to preserve the hair flag.

f)         Goat HBJ: The grade between HJF & BJF.

g)        Goat BJF: Very soft, not much loose hair, glossy. Many cosmetics companies like Sephora is selling this quality or higher at their shops.

h)        Goat ZGF: Very soft, not much loose hair, glossy. Many cosmetics companies like Sephora is selling this quality.

i)          Goat XGF: The best goat hair quality existing for cosmetic brushes. Not easy to purchase this quality. The goat should be bred in good living condition, in good nutrition, and in proper age to catch such high quality. But, it is not easy to have such a good living condition for goat in China.  

Brush Storage and Care Tips

1. Wood handle brushes should always be stored flat or hanging down to prevent water from soaking into the handle.

2. Do not store brushes in cramped quarters where the hairs can get bent out of shape and break.

3. While brushes are not made to last forever, good care can help extend their life time significantly.

4. Try not to soak handles. Water levels should only be to the start of the ferrule. Wetting handles will cause handle cracking and loosening of the ferrules. Dry handles after every cleaning.

5. Clean on a regular basis depending on use. Professional makeup artists will require a more regular cleaning regimen.

6. Occasionally, you can clean the brushes with a gentle shampoo, reshape and lie flat to dry completely before use.

7. Be gentle when cleaning brushes. Coarse scrubbing can permanently damage the hairs.

8. For natural hair brushes, occasionally use conditioner. This will keep the hairs from drying out and breaking.

Cleaning Brushes

Liquid-based product: Rinse the brush several times in clean water. Lather (use a good brush cleaner or gentle shampoo) up the brush and swirl it around in the palm of your hand, then rinse; continue until all of the rinse water is colorless and all of the cleaner is removed.

Powder Product: Rinse the brush in warm water. When the entire brush head is damp use a gentle shampoo until all of the color is removed. Gently rinse the brush to remove all soap. Reshape the brushes and lie flat to dry completely.
