Portable hot stone warmer

The main type of stones used for hot stone massages are basalt stones because of how well they retain heat.

The stones are smoothed and shaped for the massage therapist to use with massage oil during the massage.

The stones are strategically placed on the body according to size, and the heat is allowed to penetrate through the skin to help relax and soothe tight muscles.

The therapist will glide the stones up and down the body in long rhythmic strokes before they cool. Heating stones for massage requires practice and intimate knowledge of temperature.

How to heat hot stone

*Place a towel on the bottom of the warmer (slow cooker pot or roaster) to stack the rocks on. Carefully place the rocks inside, starting with the larger ones. Add enough water to cover all of the stones.

*Set the warmer on low and allow the stones to warm for about forty-five minutes so the stones can heat all the way through. Use the thermometer to check the water temperature after twenty minutes to decide whether to shorten or extend the time. The ideal temperature is between 120 and 140 degrees.

*Remove the stones carefully using the slotted spoon and place them on a towel to begin cooling. You may need to line your stone carrier with a towel and place them inside to transfer them to where you need them for the massage. They will be too hot to place directly on the skin from the warmer, but you can place them in the cold water a few seconds if necessary.

*Pick up a stone and test it on your forearm for temperature. Because everyone has a different tolerance for heat, you must test the stones before placing them on your client and get feedback from the client about the temperature. Use the jojoba oil to cover the stones so they glide over the skin without sticking and to help prevent the stones from burning the client.

Tips & Warnings The time it takes to heat the stones depends on the model of heater you choose.

The stones must warm long enough for the core temperature to raise You may add a few drops of aromatherapy essential oil to the warmer to fill the room with a pleasant smell.

Hot stone massage is dangerous unless done by a trained professional.

Stones hotter than 125 degrees will burn if left still on bare skin, place a towel between the stones and the skin to be safe. Oiled stones are slippery and heavy, dropping a stone may injure the client.
