Which breast pump is right for me?

Selection of a suitable breast pump, depends on the frequency of your intended usage, and how much time to spend on sucking out breast milk. If you are in full-time work and need to take time off from work to suck out the breast milk, you need to use automatic breast pump, cause in this way breast milk of both sides breasts can be being sucked out at the same time. However, if you only occasionally need to suck some milk out, so that when you go out, you can allow others to help feed the baby, then you only need to buy a cheap manual breast pump and it is sufficient.

How to correctly use breast pump?

If you use an electric breast pump, you just need to keep the cups on the breasts and turn on the pump; it will automatically suck the breast milk out into the connected container. Manual breast pump also have cups, and the only difference is that you are using hand extruding device or pulling the piston to suck out breast milk, rather than relying on electric motor. Electric breast pump with good performance usually takes 10~15 minutes to suck the milk out of two breasts completely, while manual breast pump may take up to 45 minutes to complete.

How to preserve breast milk sucked out by breast pump?

It is best to preserve the milk sucked out in sealable plastic or glass bottle to keep it fresh. You can also use a plastic bag specially designed to keep milk, or disposable baby bottle liner bag. However, because this kind of plastic bag is very thin, it's easy to break. Remember to date the bottle or plastic bag before putting it in the fridge or the freezer of a refrigerator, so that you can master milk’s "date of manufacture ". Having seen the milk sucked out by yourself, you may be surprised, because milk fat maybe would be isolated, floating on the surface of milk, and sometimes breast milk also may have a hint of blue.

Refrigerated fresh milk should be eaten up in 72 hours, or it can be preserved in the freezer for at least 3 months, for 3~6 months if placed in independent freezer set at –18℃ or less. Frozen milk can be preserved in fridge for 24 hours after defrosting. It must be thrown away if it is not eaten up after this time, and not be frozen again. Freezing will destroy part of the antibodies in breast milk, therefore, if not forced, better not to freeze. However, even frozen breast milk is still healthier than formula milk, and can offer the baby more components to resist diseases.

When defrosting breast milk, you can soak the milk bottle or plastic bag in warm water, or run warm water from hose over them, or put one in fridge of refrigerator for one night. Do not defrost or heat milk in microwave oven, which damages the nutrients in breast milk. Most health experts recommend throw away the milk left over by baby in the bottle, but some people argue that, as long as the remaining milk is put in the fridge immediately and to be eaten within 4 hours, there should be no problem.

How to handle with sucking difficulty?

1.Time interval is too short between last nursing or sucking and the next sucking. If your baby or you yourself just "empty" breasts for not a long time, it must be tough for you to squeeze out a lot of more milk.

2.Breast pump needs to adjust the settings. If the suction is too low or circulation rate is too fast, it would be difficult for you to squeeze out enough milk. Sometimes, no matter how you adjust your breast pump, it maybe would be unable to provide a suitable mode for you.

3.Your breast pump under use may not be good enough. Some people have used manual breast pumps or electric breast pumps which are not very good, and it's hard to squeeze out enough milk, so, to choose a high quality automatic breast pump can help you to get the best results.

4.The breast pump cup size is too small to fit your nipples. This is a common issue, because most of the breast pumps are designed for women with smaller nipples. If your nipples are bigger, during sucking, nipples will swell and thus reduce the possible milk yield. Now, a lot of breast pump companies produce large size breast pump cup. Make sure, according to your own size, to select the appropriate cups.
