Synthetic Corundum

In 1902, Auguste Verneuil, a French chemist, developed a method known as flame fusion to 

create synthetic ruby. It was the beginning of created gemstones in the laboratory in 

human history.

The method “flame fusion” also called “Verneuil’s method”. This method can be used for

 the creation of other gems materials, including sapphire, star sapphire, spinel, rutile, and 

strontium titanate.

Traditional flame fusion was being improved for many times in its development. Carefully control 

the temperature of crystal cooling or the speed of cooling, different quality synthetic gemstone 

materials are produced.

Corundum is formed of aluminum oxide (Al2O3).The color of the chromium-doped corundum is red, generally called ruby. The color is blue or colorless, called blue spphire. 

Corundum rich in color, almost includes the red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple of the 

visible spectrum. Pure corundum is colorless, sometimes it will in different colors when presented
