What is Canbus?
In the top-end cars of today you will find about 1.25 mile of wire with a total weight of about
220lb. Sometimes wiring harnesses in different car models exceed the amount of 600. From an economical point of view it makes sense to explore alterative technologies to the traditional wiring. The automotive industry, especially the German, French and American started to look for new modern communication methods. This resulted in the canbus technology.
The CAN technology for low and high speed data transfer system has been applied from 1992
by Mercedes (S class). BMW and Porsche followed rapidly and today also VW, Renault and Fiat and others apply the CAN technology in their mid class cars.
Through this CAN-bus system various signals are sent through the car's electrical wiring. Also
the car can measure and health check various accessories connected to it.
Most modern cars permanently measure the health condition of the lighting system, also when
lights are switched off. A broken bulb is immediately detected, a warning is send to the driver and sometimes the power is automatically switched off, for safety reasons.
This is where the problem occurs when the car's lighting system is converted to xenon. A xenon lamp has a completely different electrical behaviour compared to a halogen lamp. This is mainly caused by the power converter that a xenon bulb needs, the ballast.
When switched on, a halogen bulb draws high current because the filament is cold and hence
has a low resistance. Shortly after ignition the current decreases and eventually stabilizes at
about 4,5 Ampere. This process takes about 100 ms.
A ballast however behaves completely different. Most ballasts do not immediately draw current after switched on. After a short while the current consumption looks quite unpredictable and eventually the system stabilizes around 3 Ampere. But in many cases the car's on-board computer has already decided that something is wrong and disconnects the power.
The trick is to make a ballast that behaves like a halogen bulb.
Another problem is the noise produced by the ballast. The ballast contains a switched mode
power supply that produces noise. This noise can confuse the CAN-bus system with unpredictable results like windows that open automatically (or don't close a
nymore), wipers that start moving, the car's radio that produces noise etc. etc.
This noise can be eliminated by a warning canceller that can be used in combination with the
ballast.
These special capacitors suspend the electrical noise that possibly is generated by ballasts. Also
it cancels false board computer warnings. Is mainly used in conjunction with budget ballast but
can also be used with other ballast types.
What is the Function of canbus?
1.Reverse voltage protection: No damage against ballasts and bulbs will be caused by reverse
connection.
2.Protection of Short Circuit: Lock protection against continuous or long-time short circuit.
3.Protection of Open circuit: Lock protection in 0.7s after Open circuit.
