Things to know when selecting CCTV Security Camera Lenses?

Lens Format:lenses are categorized according to image size. The format of the Lens (1", 1/2", 1/3", 1/4") is derived from the diameter/size of the imager.  Usually lenses are matched to the lenses format of the camera.  Most of our professional security cameras use 1/3" or 1/4" format. 

Manual Iris:lenses of this type are mostly used indoors where lighting conditions are controlled and consistent. The iris opening (F-Stop) can be set in a fixed position to control the amount of light entering the camera.

Auto Iris:mostly used in areas where lighting conditions vary such as outdoors or indoors where light is constantly changing (open doors, windows, etc).  An auto iris lens offers the best performance in these conditions because the iris aperture automatically adjusts as the lighting changes. 

DC Drive:  The DC voltage from the camera powers the auto iris lens by opening and closing the iris.  Auto Iris lenses get their power directly from the camera through a 4-pin rectangular plug on the back or side of the camera (shown here).

Lens Types:Board Lens, Fixed Focal Lens, Varifocal Lens, IR Corrected, Motorized, Megapixel 

• Board Lensesare used in dome and case cameras to obtain a fixed field of view.  These lens can easily be switched in order to obtain a wider view (2.8) to a longer range view (12mm).  Please remember there is a limitation of what lens size can fit within a dome case.  
• Fixed / Monofocal Lensesare one of the simplest type of CCTV Security Camera Lenses.  Typically used for  "box cameras" where a fixed field of view is desired.  We carry a range from 1.9mm (fisheye lens) to 16mm (long distance lens).  The larger the lens size, the more narrow the field of view will be in.    
• Varifocal Lensesoffer more flexibility and are the preferred lenses by CCTV installers.  A varifocal lens that is 2.8 - 12mm allows for a field of view that can be adjusted manually to get the optimal view needed.
• IR Corrected Lenses:used with Day& Night Cameras. Many natural light sources contains infrared light. This amount of infrared light changes as the light source changes during a 24 hour period.  The result can be a blurry, unfocused picture at night if a Non-IR lens is used.  An IR Corrected Lens helps minimize light dispersion over 24 hours which results in a focused image both during the day and at night.  This eliminates the need to re-focus a camera lens at night or when using IR Illuminators. 
• Motorized Zoom Lensescan be somewhat complex in design but offer the greatest features through technology.  Motorized Zoom Lenses can often be adjusted remotely, are varifocal, etc. 
• Megapixel Lenses:In order to achieve the full resolution of  a megapixel camera, it is essential to use a high quality megapixel lens.  The overall image quality displayed is affected by the quality of the optical image captured onto the image sensor.  Megapixel lenses provide high contrast, brightness and sharpness across the entire image plane.  Non-megapixel lenses cannot fully display the true resolution of a megapixel sensor.

C-CS Adapter Ring:  for cameras that have a CS Mount, a C Mount lens can be used but only with an adapter that fits between the lens and camera. Please ask for details.
