1)May be substituted for part or all titanium content on a one for one basis.
2)Zirconium may be replaced by cerium. When cerium is added, the cerium/sulfur ratio should be approximately 1.5 to 1, based upon heat analysis.
3)Titanium may be present in levels up to 0.06% to protect the boron additions.
Tensile & Hardness Requirements
NOTE 1 - On plates wider than 24 in. (600 mm), the test specimen shall be taken in the transverse direction. (See Section 10 and Specification A 6/A 6M)
NOTE 2 - Either the full thickness rectangular specimen shown in Fig. 3 of the Methods and Definitions A 370, or the 1/2-in. (12.5-mm) diameter specimen shown in Fig. 4 of Methods and Definitions A 370 may be used for plates over 3/4 to 1-1/2 in. (20 to 40 mm) in thickness.
Thickness, in. (mm) | Ultimate Tensile Strength ksi (MPa) | Yield StrengthAmin, ksi (MPa) | Elongation in 2 in. (50 mm), B,C,D,E | Reduction of Area,B,C | Brinell HardnessFNumber |
To 3/4 (20), incl | 110 to 130 (760 to 895) | 100 (690) | 18 | 40G | 235 to 293 |
Over 3/4 to 2-1/2 (20 to 65), incl | 110 to 130 (760 to 895) | 100 (690) | 18 | 40G, 50H | - |
Over 2-1/2 to 6 (65 to 150), incl | 100 to 130 (690 to 895) | 90 (620) | 16 | 50H | - |
1)Measured at 0.2% offset or 0.5% extension under load as described in the Determination of Tensile Properties section of Methods and Definitions A 370.
2)Elongation and reduction of area not required to be determined for floor plates.
3)For plates tested in the transverse direction, the elongation minimum percent is reduced by 2% and the reduction of area minimum requirement is reduced by 5%.
4)When measured on the Fig. 3 (Methods and Definitions a 370) 1-1/2 in. (40mm) wide specimen (see Note 2 of this table), the elongation is determined in a 2 in. (50-mm) gage length which includes the fracture and shows the greatest elongation.
5)For nominal thickness under 5/16 in. (8 mm), a deduction from the specified percentage of elongation shall be made for decreases of the nominal thickness below 5/16 in (8 mm). See elongation requirement adjustments under the Tension Tests section of Specification A 6/A 6M, for deduction values. However, the deduction may not exceed 3%.
6)See Section 8 of this specification.
7)When measured on the Fig. 3 (Methods and Definitions A 370) 1-1/2 in.(40mm) wide, specimen (see Note 2 of this table).
8)When measured on the Fig. 4 (Methods and Definitions A 370) 1-1/2 in.(12.5mm) round specimen (see Note 2 of this table).
