P.S.:
I have a weak signal in the area I live and want to increase signal strength to improve download speeds. What antenna should I use?
To find the best solution to increase throughput and signal speed with an antenna several dimensions should be considered.
(1)Indoor / outdoor:
---If you can mount it, a suitable outdoor antenna can deliver much better performance.
(2)Directional (panel, LPDA) or omnidirectional antenna:
---If you are in a remote area where the direction of the next base station can be clearly identified, it is best to use a directional antenna and align it with the base station.
----If you are in an (urban) area where there are different signal sources and/or you are working with different providers an omnidirectional antenna offers the better and more flexible solution.
(3)High or low gain:
---In general – the higher the gain the better. But gain correlates with size of an antenna so typically there are limits. Further, if you are in an area with very strong signal strengths, a lower gain antenna may work better.
(4)What about all the other antenna characteristics?
---VSWR (to be amended) Patterns (to be amended).
Ameison’s MIMO antennas are ideal for use with wireless Access Points with MIMO capabilities. These antennas are available for 802.11a/b/g/n applications. MIMO Antenna types include Ceiling, Mini Patch, Panel, Dish and Yagi antennas. Custom MIMO antennas are available, contact us today!
MIMO Antenna Overview
Multiple–Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas have two or more antennas in a single physical package and are designed for use in IEEE 802.11n wireless networks. By utilizing multiple antennas, data throughput and range are increased compared to a single antenna using the same radio transmit power. Additionally MIMO antennas improve link reliability and experience less fading than a single antenna system. By transmitting multiple data streams at the same time, wireless capacity is increased.
MIMO technology uses Multipath (when wireless signals “bounce” off of objects and arrive at the receiver at different times) to improve wireless performance. MIMO technology takes a single data stream and breaks it down into several separate data streams and sends it out over multiple antennas. This provides redundancy.
3G/LTE antennas and your health. Are there any influences?
There is always debate on if and how which type of electromagnetic fields are influencing the health condition of humans. So far, there is no scientific evidence that the frequencies and signal strengths typically used in 3G/LTE have any negative influence. With respect to using an antenna even to the contrary: an antenna is a focal point for electromagnetic waves and using one results in reduced fields around the antenna.
How can I test whether the antenna improves the signal?
You can find a number of apps and programs to test download speed, one example is “Speedtest” from Ookla. With those you can compare download rates with and without antenna.
