A thermal expansion valve (often abbreviated as TEV, TXV, or TX valve) is a component in refrigeration and air conditioning systems that controls the amount of refrigerant flow into the evaporator thereby controlling the superheating at the outlet of the evaporator. Thermal expansion valves are often referred to generically as "metering devices".

Function and How does Expansion valves work?
1. A thermostatic expansion valve is a metering device that monitors the amount of refrigerant that enters an A/C's evaporator. When an air conditioning unit switches on, the compressor transfers refrigerant in gas form to the condenser. The condenser switches the gas refrigerant into a liquid refrigerant. The liquid refrigerant leaves the receiver-drier and enters the expansion valve pressure switch.
2. Thermal expansion valve has a sensing bulb, which is connected to TXV by a length of capillary tubing. The capillary tube transmits sensing bulb pressures to the top of the TXV valve’s diaphragm.
3. AC expansion valves work by controlling the amount of refrigerant flows to the evaporator coils. It acts as restriction to provide a specific amount of refrigerant flows into the evaporator coils.
