Recently, silicon nitride bearing balls (Ø50-Ø101.6mm diameter) were prepared with high density (p=3.3g/cm3), extraordinary mechanical property (HV≥1650kg/mm2, bending strength ≥900MPa), excellent stability and consistency (weibull modulus =15), which could meet the application requirements of large sized bearing balls.

Compared with steel ball, Si3N4 ball has following advantages:

1. 59% lighter than steel ball, which means less centrifugal force and less wear on the groove during high speed and acceleration.

2. 44% larger elastic modulus, which means less deformation under load.

3. Harder with Rockwell hardness as 78.

4. Smaller friction coefficient.

5. Only 1/4 coefficient of thermal expansion of steel, can endure sharp fluctuation of temperature.

6. Superior surface finish can be achieved, Ra could be 4~6 nm.

7. Can endure high temperature with high hardness and strength up to 1050ºC.

8. Never rust, and can roll without lubrication.

9. More corrosion resistant than steel.

10. Free of metal contamination.

11. Non-magnetic.

12. Electric isolation.

13. No adhesive-wear.

Their characteristics are shown as follows:

1. High corrosion resistance, which means they can be also used in strong acid, strong alkali and seawater.

2. High temperature resistance. Si3N4 ceramic balls remain the same strength and hardness even in 1100℃.

3. Electrical insulation, non-magnetic, they can also be used in magnetic field.

4. Si3N4 ceramic balls have a low density of 3.26g/cm3. It is approximately 60% lighter than steel balls, which extremely decrease the centrifugal force on the groove, in order to effectively reduce the wear and tear.

5. High rigidity and strength. Compared with chrome steel, Si3N4 ceramic is twice higher in hardness and half higher in elastic modulus value.

6. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Si3N4 is nearly 25% of the chrome steel, which leads to a good thermal shock resistance.

7. The self-lubrication of Si3N4 ceramic ball bearings can help to solve the contamination and inconvenient caused by lubricator, it can also be used in vacuum and high temperature.

8. Low thermal conductivity.
