Product Features

The oxygen sensor is used to measure the concentration of oxygen.The sensor meets the

Oxygen Sensor Design

The device most widely used at present consists of a stabilised zirconia electrolyte tube 

with platinum electrodes deposited on the inner and outer surfaces. With different pO2 on 

inner and outer surfaces an EMF is generated. If carbon monoxide is present a further 

reaction is possible:                     

 

CO (gas) + O2 (electrolyte) -> CO2 (gas) + 2e- (electrode)

 

The catalytic reaction at the platinum electrode

 

CO (gas) + ½ O2 ->CO2           

 

can minimise the above effect. Further reactions can occur when H2, H2O and NOx are 

present. The successful application of an exhaust monitor requires a simple and 

inexpensive device which is able to operate in a harsh environment at temperatures in the 

region of 900°C in the presence of thermal shock.

A typical sensor is shown in the diagram, figure 2, with the format being similar to an 18mm 

diameter sparking plug.
